Abstract

This session will present two aspects of the material culture of Breton monasteries: financial loans and the physical support of their documents. Paper -a will discuss the use of pignorative contracts which circumvented the prohibitions of the church on usury and permitted lending to members of the local population for causes that were deemed just. Paper -b will describe a nondestructive evaluation conducted with Terahertz imaging on ink, wax, inclusions, seal ties and parchments and discuss more specifically the application of the technique to an examination of the seals of Breton Cistercian houses.
