Abstract

How did religion influence local identity? And how did local identity influence local religion? The second of three panels focusing on how local identity was constructed, expressed, and how we as scholars infer local identity from a range of source material, this panel aims to address the relationship between religion and local identity. The first paper explores how local identity was used to create Christian doctrine in Alexandria, while the second paper will explore how Augustine's Sermon 105 employed religious scripture to address contemporary events. The panel's final paper will employ liturgical chants to explore the creation of local identities in 10th-century Trier.
