Abstract

Excessive behaviour can be found in all areas of life, today as in the Middle Ages. It can be used to express a wide variety of things: protest, wealth, claims to power, ruthlessness, knowledge... The first of the two sessions focuses on those expressions in religious fields of action starting with the clergy's excesses in France, then moving on to the dichotomy of extreme richness and poverty in mendicant vitae. The common question is: What goals did the actors pursue with their behaviour and how was it perceived by others?
