Abstract

This session will focus on sonic otherness. Listening to sonic and vocal differences sets up an almost instinctive boundary, which both defines and rejects the Other. Alex Rodriguez Suarez will measure how the adhan intervenes in the perception of Muslim and Christian identities. Llewelyn Hopwood will look at how Welsh poets used the sounds of languages to assert their dominance in reaction to social changes. Chloé Bonnet will examine the practices of sound transcription of Hebrew words by Castilian notaries. This session will explore the identity function of sound.
