Abstract

This final session on 'Performance and the Page' begins with James Simpson's discussion of the layout of the alexandrine in French manuscripts and the implications it may have for contemporary reception and modern edition of the works. The session then broadens its scope to the Chanson de Roland and Machaut's later Voir Dit, through which Kate Maxwell will argue that Jacques Derrida's theory of grammatology can be usefully applied to medieval manuscripts and writing. To close the session and the day, Peter Davies will offer a brief reflection on all four of the sessions and invite discussion from the floor, to consider where we have come in our exploration of the performance of the page and what may lie ahead as the journey continues.
