Abstract

This round table will draw out the issues raised in the four 'Journeying' sessions, addressing the benefits and problems of the study of medieval journeys and routes from cross-disciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives. How do the case studies we have seen presented in the 'Journeying' sessions elucidate the medieval experience of travel? We have seen case studies on periods from the 4th to the 14th centuries, and on regions as distant as Scandinavia and Egypt. Can we make use of common methodologies in regions and periods as diverse as these?

Participants will include Alison Gascoigne (University of Southampton), Leonie Hicks (University of Southampton), Sue Ellen Holbrook (Southern Connecticut State University), Hugh Kennedy (School of Oriental and African Studies), Paul Oldfield (Manchester Metropolitan University), Felicitas Schmieder (Universität Hagen), and speakers from the four 'Journeying Along Medieval Routes' sessions.
