IMC 2010: Sessions

Session 1701: To Travel and to Explore: Was There Anything that the Congress Told Us We Didn't Know Already? - A Round Table Discussion

Thursday 15 July 2010, 14.00-16.00

Organiser:Felicitas Schmieder, Historisches Institut, FernUniversität Hagen
Moderator/Chair:Felicitas Schmieder, Historisches Institut, FernUniversität Hagen
Abstract

When evaluating the past four days of the Congress, two main areas will be considered:

Firstly, what expectations were raise – which issues have been approached, which have been overlooked? Have there been particular gaps, achievements, or surprises? Certain fields have evoked especial interest such as: Travelling for political as well as religious reasons, the technical and infrastructural aspects of travelling, but also virtual and transitional journeys, movement, and exchanges, as well as comparing and contrasting knowledge, norms, literary motifs, and objects. Several papers and sessions have ‘travelled’ beyond the borders of Latin Europe, has the Special Thematic Strand done enough to encourage this field of exploration?

Secondly, are there lines of research that may deserve further investigation in the future (Such as the geographic approach to the Middle Ages in terms of medieval cartography, or the implementation of modern technological means (GIS/GPS) to reconstruct medieval topography)? These and other issues brought up throughout this year's Congress will be discussed.

Participants include Keith Lilley (Queen's University, Belfast), Marianne O'Doherty (University of Southampton), Martina Stercken (Universität Zürich), and Jo van Steenbergen (Universiteit Gent).
