Paper 201-b | Beowulf's Geographic Modes: Realism or Not? (Language: English) Index terms: Language and Literature - Old English, Rhetoric |
Abstract | The literature of the Anglo-Saxons reveals a variety of modes of perceiving and representing time and space. This variety is found within literary works and across the corpus of Old English literature. At times geographic accounts appear to aim for a descriptive realism, which can be found beside more symbolic landscapes which are also explored by writers and their characters. Papers in this session will examine and discuss these tropes in relation to the Old English poem Andreas, translations of Latin geographic literature, and the Old English charms. |
