Abstract

Participants in this workshop will be introduced to the religious musical culture of pre-1080 Iberia, by performing some of the transcribable chants and looking at some of the untranscribable ones. The discussion will then turn to the challenges presented to historians by the surviving musical documents, and to an exploration of some of the ways the evidence might be used to give us the clearest possible picture of an extinct musical culture. All are very welcome to join in the discussion and the singing. This workshop has been supported financially by the AHRC/ESRC Religion and Society programme.
