Abstract

This round table brings together specialists from cognate fields with the aim of exploring 'mapping' and medieval map-making within the context of both European and Arabic culture. Our focus is on fundamental questions, such as what was understood to be 'a map' within different medieval spatial and temporal contexts, and how were maps being conceived and consumed? To address these issues the roundtable participants include art and literary historians, historians of cartography, and historical geographers, each of whom will use their particular area of subject expertise to reflect upon approaching, analysing, and interpreting medieval maps and the processes of their production.

Participants include Paul D. A. Harvey (Durham University), Marcia Kupfer (Ohio), Felicitas Schmieder (FernUniversität Hagen), and Camille Serchuk (Southern Connecticut State University).
