Abstract | The Conversion of Europe is widely seen as an entirely medieval phenomenon coming to a conclusion with the mission in the Baltic region at some time in the high or late Middle Ages. Nevertheless, the last stages of this process went on even in early modern times and in the mission movement coming from the west Lutheran reverends took over the work of their Catholic predecessors. The Russian Orthodox attempts of missionary work in Northern Scandinavia are known even less hitherto. This session seeks to bring the Conversion of the midnight lands as a process between East and West, Middle Ages and Early Modern times to the light of the midnight sun. |
