Abstract

Recent research emphasizes that political authority is realized not only by exercising brute power but in symbolic actions too. Stefan Burkhardt discusses the Roman imperial heritage in Sicily which was absorbed in a manifold and long-term process, and argues that this had a greater impact on the actual politics than it is traditionally assumed. Thomas Foerster studies Henry's return to Germany from Palermo in 1195 in triumpho, a term that can be seen in terms of an actual ritual of triumph. Georg Vogeler explains the cultural context of the notion of 'sacrae imperiales litterae' which was often used to address charters and writs of the emperor.
