Abstract

This session aims to look at the careers of soldiers and retainers after the violent death of their lords, either in battle or on the scaffold. How do they cope with the loss of income and prestige that came with following a great lord? Do they seek to attach themselves to another lord with similar or different political allegiances to their old master? The session will help illustrate the inner workings of affinities and help answer the important question of how cohesive they were.
