Abstract

In 1397 count Guy of Chatillon died in Avesnes. The death of this patron of Froisart meant the end of the dynasty of Blois-Châtillon. In a dramatic poem the anonymous author mourns the sad loss of the prince. Reinoud III van Brederode founded a family chapel in the church of Vianen between 1540-1542; the second paper considers the relationship between the tomb, the retable, and the transis from the chapel to show that the iconography fits better into the medieval tradition than has been assumed. Central aspects of the third paper are the persons and groups who engaged as benefactors in memorial practices in Thorn Abbey, their intentions, and social backgrounds.
