Abstract | Orderic Vitalis is one of the most celebrated of Anglo-Norman historical writers, and a key author within the effloresence of historical writing following the Norman conquest of England. Despite his fame however, Orderic remains under-studied. His chronicle has tended to be mined for information, rather than considered in the round, and on its own terms. Since the magisterial work of Majorie Chibnall, little has been done to analyse Orderic's intentions in writing and how and why the 13 book Ecclesiastical History takes on the sturcture and interests that it does. This session will draw on a collaborative project on Orderic developed by the Universities of Durham, York, East Anglia, and Lincoln in the UK. Papers will explore different ways in which this enigmatic, yet voluminous, history can be approached, through consideration of Orderic's intellectual, devotional, and literary education and skills. |
