Abstract | Distributions in cash or kind were often an integral part of late-medieval memorial services. Can evolutions be distinguished in the portion of the 'memorial budget' spent on distributions, and in the choice of preferred beneficiaries? The first paper aims to answer these questions on the basis of the late medieval sources from the urban parish church of Saint Martin (Courtrai). The second paper discusses the foundation of almshouses by career clergy in the late Middle Ages as a form of commemoration that fits in a strategy of church reform. The third paper explores the structure and composition of the obituary of the church wardens of Diksmuide, a small Flemish town with a single parish. What information does it contain, what does it omit? Was information rendered correctly? How does its one-sided or limited nature affect historical research? It will be argued that obituaries remain an invaluable source of information. |
