Abstract

With the growth of the university in the 13th century, Oxford became a centre for the production and trade of manuscripts. These books were not limited to texts for students, and texts for formal study and private devotion were often lavishly decorated. This session explores the diversity of the books produced and traded in the city to consider questions of style, patronage and function in connection with illuminated manuscripts.
