Abstract

Recent historiography on the social context of law has emphasised the importance of the extra-judicial mechanisms (arbitration and negotiation) and extra-legal norms (trust and reputation) that operated behind the formal machinery and prescriptive rules of the various medieval law courts.

The round table brings together historians working on the common law, urban justice and manorial courts to discuss how we can move beyond the formal records to study such informal processes, as well as an economist, to explore how modern theory can help explain the medieval experience. The goal is to identify the main areas of debate and potential for future collaborative and interdisciplinary research.

Participants will include James Davis (Queen's University, Belfast), Mary Koyama (University of York), and Tony Moore (University of Reading).
