Abstract

Analysis of the writing style of Caesarius of Heisterbach allows a comparative literary analysis of the question of rules, while new research on Cistercian abbeys in Norway – far from Burgundy where the Order began, the abbots met yearly, and the regulations were discussed and developed - poses material questions. Excavations and documents will question to the meaning of 'rules' in the Middle Ages: conformity to Cistercian regulations when possible, and adaptations for survival when not.
