Abstract | Every human society establishes rules and each member is expected to follow them. Whoever breaks these rules has to face some kind of punishment. Nevertheless, a number of individuals develop strategies to defy the rules. Exactly the same was the case in medieval German society as is shown in various Middle High German courtly texts (for example in Konrad von Würzburg's Der Schwanritter) as well as in heroic texts (for example in Alpharts Tod). Martschini's paper deals with the contempt of written rules, while Zudrell discusses the necessity of breaking the taboo in case of Mahrtenehe. Hable refers to the disrespect of heroic behavioural norms. |
