Abstract

'Mapping Contexts' falls under the 'Mappings' rubric that comprises it and two other sessions in a proposed series that aims to advance studies in the history of cartography. Papers in the 'Mapping Contexts' session contextualize select maps by examining their social, historical, and memorial functions and by weaving those understandings into new ideas about their makers, sponsorship, and patronage.
