Abstract

This panel will discuss the historical points of contact between Byzantium and Rus' from the 10th to the 13th centuries. Byzantine culture was translated to early Rus' by means of Byzantine churchmen, the transfer of holy relics, the translation of books, the erection of churches and monasteries, the adoption of Byzantine iconographic themes and decorative objects, and through marriage alliances. An evaluation of the historical moments of contact and spheres of contact where Byzantine authority and influence is or should be in evidence will be discussed in terms of the modes of cultural transfer and means of cultural adjustment.
