Abstract | In an era of medieval scholarship where studies on Louis IX proliferate, the ostensibly paradoxical nature of the royal Franciscan still has the ability to instil its modern audience with feelings of anxiety. Yet the royal and Franciscan identities - if indeed they can be spoken about as separate concepts - were not incompatible in the 13th and 14th centuries. Via an exploration of case studies from various geographical regions of Europe, this interdisciplinary session aims to reassess the place of the royal Franciscan within the field of Franciscan studies. |
