Abstract

The aim of this session is to explore the ways in which emperors and kings sought to make their power visible to their subjects through the design and style of palaces, and the extent to which these complexes were deliberately intended to evoke the power of past rulers through their style and use of building materials, and to offer opportunities for the rulers for whom they were built to show their power in public appearances, ceremonies, and rituals. The session ranges across the Middle Ages in order to examine change and continuity on a broad canvas.
