Abstract

This session looks at some of the key aspects of monastic material culture and the contribution of religious communities to medieval Europe's artistic heritage. The first paper looks at imagery from Irish Franciscan friaries in a context of Franciscan preaching and devotional life as well as the use of space. Paper 2 uses the example of the Cistercian abbey of Maulbronn to address wider questions of the uses of space and self-representation; and the third paper considers patrons who supported the religious orders and their houses and whose power and prestige was reflected in the prosperity of the religious foundations under their care and visibly evident in the material culture of these houses.
