Abstract

The session examines the social organization of Arctic Norway in the early medieval period, before the region was incorporated into the Norwegian state, through a presentation of mainly archaeological evidence for Omd, the northernmost norse chiefdom. Subsequently, Omd and other northern chiefdoms played a crucial part in the emergence of a national monarchy. The region's further integration into the national state was achieved largely through the Church's religious, political, and commercial dominance of northern Norway.
