Abstract

In this session we will explore the pre-Christian belief system of Frisia and the North Sea area, its interaction with Christianity and the syncretic processes it engendered, as well as its influence on the development of post-medieval Dutch and Frisian identity. Our interdisciplinary approach to the topic will encompass the critical analysis of archaeological, historical, and literary source material, and will scrutinise the role of pre-Christian religion in a long-term perspective.
