Abstract

This session analyses different representations of women both in text and image across a variety of medieval French literary sources. Sophie Harwood's paper looks at the variations in the portrayals of warrior women in several manuscripts of the Roman de Troie: this includes differences in scene selection for illustration, as well as edits made to the text across different manuscript copies. Lydia Hayes's paper then examines the influence that female saints in Old French hagiography had on the development of the characters of noble ladies in Chrétien de Troyes's romances. Finally, Emily Shartrand's paper looks at the text, illustrations, and marginalia of a single manuscript of La Mort de Roi Artu to analyse rebellion in general and female rebellion in particular.
