| Abstract | Despite often being at the margins of scholarly discussions of the medieval world, warfare, its preparation, and its aftermath played a central role in the lives of medieval Europeans, whether as participants, victims, or indirectly through taxes and labour obligations. The new synthesis by D. and B. Bachrach, Warfare in Medieval Europe c. 400-1453, offers an opportunity look back at the past century of scholarship in this field, and consider how specialists write military history, and approach the sources. This round table discussion brings together scholars with a range of views to take up these questions and also to renew the discussion, on a new foundation, about the fundamental questions of continuity with the Roman world, the scale of warfare in medieval Europe, and its impact on society.
