Abstract

With these four panels on royal marriages in the Middle Ages and the early modern era we aim to start a project that will allow us to compare uses, rituals, and diplomatic strategies in different geographic areas, as much as to perceive the importance of affection within royal unions and its connection to the necessity of offspring. One of the panels will especially try to approach the thematic strand of this particular conference and be concerned with memory lasting from these royal matches. This first panel will try to extract fundamental issues and rituals from legal, literary and historical texts, aiming to show some similarities and ongoing changes in varied geographies and times.
