Abstract

This round table discussion brings together scholars of literature, history, and art history to think through the challenges and opportunities that teaching the European Middle Ages outside the traditional academic geographies brings. How does teaching the canon of western medieval literature function differently in a postcolonial setting? What meanings do western medieval art and philosophy have for students outside North America and Europe? What comparative perspectives can be brought to bear on these texts and histories when teaching in non-western settings? By attempting to answer some of these questions we shall contribute to ongoing discussions of medievalism and the global Middle Ages, and of race, inclusivity, and diversity in medieval studies.

Participants include Paulo Henrique de Carvalho Pachá (Universidade Federal Fluminense, Rio de Janeiro), René Hernández Vera (Universidad Santo Tomás, Bogotá), Sjoerd Levelt (Bilkent University, Ankara), Kathryn Maude (American University of Beirut), and Idette Noomé (University of Pretoria).
