Abstract

The medieval European Jewish neighborhood was a physical, social, and topographical space reflecting unique adaptations of residential and communal needs according to religious laws and customs as they developed within the Christian cities of the period. Understanding the features of Jewish communal life in these cities requires a complex, inter-disciplinary approach combining sources from Halacha, history, and literature. This session aims to shed light upon a critical phase in the development of Jewish thought and analyze the social, cultural, religious, and inter-cultural aspects at play in medieval European cities.
