Abstract

This session will present new approaches to religious life in medieval Georgia, which places its unique developments in its wider environmental and geographical context. From the design of churches, to the structure of desert monasticism, this session's papers will explore the influence of Georgia's widely varied environments on the religious built environment. This session's papers will also apply new approaches of interconnectivity to explain the design of Georgian icons and the political orientation of hagiographical accounts, emphasising Georgia's geographical position at the edge of the Christian oikumene.
