Abstract | Since her Ph.D. thesis on 'The House of God', the notion and character of holiness in the earlier Middle Ages has remained one of the three major themes in Miriam Czock's oeuvre, focusing, above all, on 'holy objects'. Therefore, it seems adequate that one of the sessions in her commemoration deals with holiness. Following a brief introduction by the moderator into Miriam's contribution to the research on holiness, the papers of this session, all on the early Middle Ages, take up different themes and approaches related to and inspired by her work: The first paper inquires into (any sort) of holy places in the writings of Gregory of Tours and into his 'localized' concept of holiness, the second analyses the development of apostolic holiness in the concept of Pope Gregory I, and the third discusses the legitimizing character of late Carolingian saints' lives revealing an interdependence of religious and political history. |
