Wednesday 7 July 2021, 19.00-20.30

Sponsor:Medieval WaterWorks
Organiser:Hetta Howes, School of English & Drama, Queen Mary, University of London
Moderator/Chair:Bethany Whalley, Department of English Language & Literature, King's College London
Abstract

This pair of interlinked but autonomous round table discussions creates a laboratory for testing the theoretical and methodological potential of water; our aspiration is to foster open and collective discussion about how thinking with water can contribute to the way we understand, research, write, and teach the Middle Ages. This round table is dedicated to the discussion of bodies in and of water. From water as a space in which women enact motherhood, to its use as a negative signifier in early medieval poetry, speakers will explore the surprising intersections that water creates across disciplines and time.

Participants include Kirsty Bolton (University of Southampton), Diane Heath (Canterbury Christ Church University), and Teresa Pilgrim (University of Surrey).
