Abstract | This session addresses lexical borrowing in the North Sea region in the Middle Ages. We showcase different approaches to the lexical material, encompassing a range of cultural and linguistic evidence, and addressing methodological tensions such as the interaction between structural, semantic, and sociolinguistic evidence. The case studies in this session span a range of different contexts and contact situations, from the onomastic evidence for Viking settlement in lowland Britain to the penetration of French loans into the Old Icelandic lexicon. |
