Abstract

The fourth and final session of the 'Medieval Papacy, c. 500-1500' strand. This session looks at exemplary holiness and prophecy surrounding the popes. Paper-a looks at how Flavio Biondo, the Italian humanist, used historical accounts of medieval popes as a pedagogical guide to his contemporary popes. Paper-b focuses on Cistercian poetic epitaphs for the first Cistercian pope, Eugenius III. Paper-c takes the disputed election to the archbishopric of York in 1141 as an opportunity to reexamine the early years of the system of papal judges-delegate in England.
