Abstract | This panel will discuss problems, findings, and new methods in editing the Wooing Group prayers and their later adaptation into the 15th-century Talkyng of the Loue of God. It will address how codicological approaches might answer such questions as: How did lay patronage shape book production and circulation in England? What role did patronage play in the promotion of religious reform and orthodoxy? What role did translation play in it? How and why did literature written for women religious become attractive to wider audiences? How and why might literary innovation be made to look like a return to tradition? This session was planned by Catherine Innes-Parker. We will hold it in her memory. |
