Abstract

Michael Clanchy, who died on 29 January 2021, was one of the most eminent medieval historians of his generation. He wrote on the history of England in the Middle Ages, on Abelard, and on medieval literacy. His From Memory to Written Record, first published in 1979, is deservedly considered a classic. Michael Clanchy was also a teacher whose students remembered him fondly long after their graduation. After his retirement, he came to the Leeds IMC every year until his health started to deteriorate. Whenever he was on the programme, the room was invariably packed. He inspired countless young scholars and was genuinely interested in their research. The Leeds IMC remembers him through this round table discussion, which celebrates the many aspects of his work.

Participants include Anna Adamska (Universiteit Utrecht), Stuart Airlie (University of Glasgow), David Carpenter (King's College London), David Ganz (Independent Scholar, Cambridge), and Jan M. Ziolkowski (Harvard University).
