Abstract

This panel will examine pilgrimage within the context of Late Antique Christianity, with particular emphasis on the manner in which specific localities and how their religious significance were perceived by the pilgrims who visited or wrote about them. The first paper in this panel (Short) will track the development of the Mangana site from its origins to its positions as a focal point of pilgrimage for Orthodox Christians. The second paper (Livorsi) will consider how the healing miracle within Venantius Fortunatus' Life of Saint Martin relates to the whole poem, readership and the cultic environment of 6th c. Tours where Martin was venerated.
