Abstract

The session deals with the cult of weather saints and their relation and interaction with communities from various (macro - micro) areas: Ireland, England, Iona Island, and Winchester. It explores both the sociological and textual level of the concept of community and the community's relation to sanctity and weather. The concept of community is viewed both as a textual and as a social construct. The social level 1. brings forth the multiple functions of the weather that 1. has symbolic spiritual values and 2. highlights social, political, and historical reasons for the promotion of certain saints. The textual level views the intercessory function of saints and their relation with monastic and lay communities.
