Abstract

Although Rome usually enjoys a pleasant climate, things could become too hot from time to time. The resulting hotheadedness has further escalated into violence against popes and antipopes on more than one occasion. This session aims to take a closer look at both physical as well as verbal violence against the papacy. Is there a shift to be detected from corporeal mistreatment to scolding? Or have Roman public displays of passion remained dangerous to life and limb of popes throughout the Middle Ages? To this end, three case studies, ranging from the 8th to the 10th century, will be studied.
