Abstract

In this round table discussion, a group of climate historians discuss various methods for reconstructing the medieval climate, the most important variables being precipitation and temperature. The major types of written sources, methodological and spatial-temporal differences within Europe, utilisation possibilities, and uncertainties in the reconstructions will be considered. Special attention is given to the possibilities for improving reconstruction methods in order to decrease uncertainties. The discussion also aims to open new ways towards the identification and better understanding of medieval climatic anomalies and the characteristics of the probably best documented transition period between the Medieval Climatic Anomaly and the Little Ice Age.

Participants include Martin Bauch (Leibniz-Institut für Geschichte und Kultur des östlichen Europa, Leipzig), Chantal Camenisch (Universität Bern), Piotr Oliński (Uniwersytet Mikołaja Kopernika, Toruń), and Dag Retsö (Stockholms Universitet).
