Abstract | The now-classic model of Frankish monasteries as deeply integrated in exchange economies and tied to the Carolingian dynasty both politically and economically is based on important evidence, particularly polyptychs and charter collections. However, there is room for further research, especially in relation to how monastic economies changed over time and how monastic economies worked in various regions. Moreover, the model favours exceptional examples of monasteries that owned huge tracts of lands. But how applicable are models based on these mega-monasteries to other institutions? By raising many of these questions, the sessions seek to rethink the economies of early medieval monasticism. |
