| Abstract | According to a well-established historiographical tradition, intimacy as a relationship grounded on emotional closeness is a modern product, the result of the bourgeois distinctions between public and private sphere. Present-day conceptions of intimacy are connected to the development of an ideal border including some people and excluding everyone else. What meanings and functions were attributed - if they were - to intimate relationships in the Early Middle Ages? The session will face this question for the context of the Frankish world between Merovingian and Carolingian times. The vocabulary, practices, and spaces of intimate relationships will be investigated by the means of both written and material sources. |
