Abstract | Historic Environment Scotland's multidisciplinary research project (2019 - present) has improved understanding of Caerlaverock Castle's history, archaeology, collections, and natural environment. We will present a few highlights before focusing on two individual pieces of research. Tipping will discuss how storm surges in the High Middle Ages, dated by radiocarbon and optically stimulated luminescence, prompted the movement from the old castle to a new one built further inland. We will end with Brown's examination of the new castle's reconstructions after its destruction by Robert I in c. 1312, setting the Maxwell family's ambitions into the context of the architectural and political remaking of Scotland. |
