Abstract

Medieval coins and seals offered a vehicle for a constructed image of the self, carrying a message that might be imbued with personal, religious, or political meaning. This session will explore how coins and seals might function as figurative and symbolic tools in contexts ranging from the documentary culture of late medieval England to the state portraiture of the Italian courts.
