Abstract

This session aims at presenting different aspects of language as a boundary between Jewish, Muslim, and Christian communities in Egypt, England, and on the Iberian Peninsula, and the varied attempts to traverse this boundary in written communication. Of particular interest are the reasons for overcoming (or at least trying to overcome) the language barrier, be it polemics, local customs, governmental regulation, cultural exchange, or simple practicality. To that end, both sacred and profane texts, with a focus on the fields of religion, economics, and poetry, will be analyzed and compared.
