Abstract | The eastern Adriatic has been a border during most of its history. In the early medieval period, this has been recorded in architecture and sculpture far more than in the written sources. The Carolingian penetration through Istria towards the former Roman province of Dalmatia is one of the most interesting questions of Croatian historiography. It was an area characterized by the still evident power of the Eastern Roman Empire, soon challenged by the Franks. This session explores the concepts of transfer of forms, functions, and ideas in this peripheral zone where the opposing forces, traditions, and ideas clashed and interwove. |
