Abstract

There has recently been an upsurge of interest in the structure and character of medieval revolts. On the whole, however, revolts are still largely studied in national silos. There has been little consideration of the ways rebels and risings passed across national and other borders. This session will demonstrate the potential for transnational approaches by examining the dynamics of medieval risings, considering how revolts were reported in other countries and discussing how exiled rebels moved to other countries. Comparisons with more modern insurgency such as the Arab Spring will be used to suggest the potential of transnational perspectives.
